About CZ Mollusks
CZ Mollusks is an independent encyclopedic resource dedicated to documenting the diversity of mollusks found across the Czech Republic. Our goal is to make scientific knowledge about these often-overlooked organisms accessible to a wider audience, from curious naturalists and students to conservation professionals and policy makers.
Our Mission
Despite hosting over 250 recorded mollusk species, the Czech Republic's mollusk fauna receives relatively little public attention compared to more charismatic animal groups. Many people are unaware that the country's rivers, ponds, forests, and meadows support an extraordinary variety of freshwater mussels, land snails, slugs, and tiny fingernail clams.
We aim to bridge this awareness gap by providing well-researched, clearly written species profiles and ecological guides. All of our content is based on peer-reviewed scientific literature, national checklists, and verified field observations. We strive to present information that is both scientifically accurate and genuinely useful for anyone interested in learning about Czech mollusks.
Content and Sources
Our species information draws primarily from the following authoritative sources:
- The national checklist and distribution maps published by Malacologica Bohemoslovaca
- The Czech Red List of Mollusks for conservation status assessments
- The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species for global context
- Wikipedia's comprehensive species lists for reference and cross-checking
- Published research papers in journals including Journal of Molluscan Studies, Malacologica Bohemoslovaca, and Folia Malacologica
